Before your next photoshoot, collect a selection of product photos you admire and figure out what makes them unique, and recreate that special element in your own way. Great product photography is an amazing art. Then when I spot a couch on Craigslist, or a lamp at Ikea, I can look back at my inspiration and ask myself, “would the designers of my favorite rooms have chosen that?” If the answer’s no, time to move on. One thing that’s helped me narrow down my options is to collect my favorite interior spaces into one place on Pinterest. I just moved into a new place and am starting from scratch on most of my furniture. (I’m a big fan of even*cleveland’s Imaginary Outfits, shown here.) You can search the Polyvore database or import items yourself, and it even has an amazing tool for silhouetting the items so you can layer them on top of each other, or just set them all against a nice white background. If you’re creating something like an outfit and combining specific products from various sources, Polyvore is the best. Boards like this are easy to do in Photoshop or Olioboard from images spotted around the web, but one could just as easily be made non-digitally with swatches and magazine clippings.Ģ. ![]() ![]() A mood board is especially useful for anytime you hire someone else to be creative for you – it lets them know exactly what feel you’re going for.
